Computers of wood and brass

Here’s more cool stuff. These are among my all-time favourite case mods.

1. Steam punk screen and keyboard — Hieronymus Isambard “Jake” von Slatt

Steampunk screen and keyboard

Lots of details on how they were built at the Steampunk Workshop links above. This must be just about the funkiest pair of projects I’ve seen in years.

2. Dragon Case - John Wudl

Dragon Case mod

Made from black walnut and oak, John Wudl from Pennsylvania created a really beautiful machine. It’ll be up on my wall when I start work on the concept I have in my head. More pictures and a writeup at ExtremeTech’s Case Mod Contest 2007.

3. The Kowal Portable Typewriter and Adding Machine — Lady Steampunk

Kowal Portable Typewriter and Adding Machine

Mary Robinette Kowal added a wonderful 19th-century design and colour scheme to her laptop, to turn it into this beauty.

4. The Unidyne PCJeffrey Stephenson

The Unidyne PC

Stephenson has a thing for industrial design from the first half of the 20th century, and this example of his work is really special. The iconic 1950s microphone PC mod is made from basswood, and a series of pictures documents every elaborate step in its construction.

5. The Skyscraper Photo PCJeffrey Stephenson

The Skyscraper Photo PC

Based on the classic art deco lines of a 1931 Hammond clock, Stephenson used a small flat-panel display for this lovely upright PC case. Again, he documents the build, from the original Bakelite inspiration to curing the mahogany veneer on the finished article.

These are brilliant, I love them!

They are, aren’t they? I’ve been remiss, though (in more than one little issue ;-). I shouldn’t have forgotten this spectacular canary wood and stained-glass mod:

Sadly, the original seems to have disappeared. If anyone can point me in the direction of the owner, so I can properly credit them, I’d be most grateful.

If you have any favourites yourself, please post them.

Thanks for including two of my computers in your list.

The stained glass computer maker is known only as “Jimbo64″ on the Ultra Tech Forum.

You do make great-looking machines, Jeffrey. It was hard choosing just two. Thanks for coming by.

It seems jealousy doesn’t make me nasty, after all. ;-)

Thanks for coming by, Jimbo64, and confirming who made the stained glass box. Very impressive work.
