My hiatus, and my pending return

As some of you may have noticed, I’ve been taking a bit of a break from blogging. Life is a touch on the hectic side at the moment, with some good developments and some less entertaining. I’ll return soon, I promise. Meantime, welcome, and please feel free to browse around. Over 200,000 words of riveting, entertaining, and incontrovertible truth are archived on these pages. Enjoy them.

Enjoy the break! Look forward to reading more of the same when your blogging “pencil” is sharp & at the ready once more.

    I eagerly await your return.

I think you should collate your best, most popular posts into a book and sell it in Exclusive Books.

    Guaranteed best seller.

I think Ivo has been kidnapped by radical Marxist Environmentalist Polar Bear acolytes and is being forced to feed crushed bamboo to hungry Panda cubs in a Che Guevara T-shit :)

  6. Ivo Vegter September 8, 2008 10:04

Well, it did involve bamboo, but not exactly how you describe. Besides, even if faced with MEPB terrorists, I would refuse to wear a Guevara t-shirt, unless it was the one with the bullet hole in his forehead, which I think is very funny. It reads: “Che is dead. Get over it.”

I’m back, but have some catching up to do with real work before I get this buggy kickstarted again.

We’ll miss you Ivo. Would have loved to hear what you’d say about Zuma. Still, we hope to hear more from you in the future.

I’m not making promises, because I keep not getting around to it — catching up on real work — but I’ve been meaning to blog again for weeks now. The real problem is a surfeit of ideas, now :-)

    Will be back soon.

Promises, promises, Ivo. You know I think if you ask nicely The Fed might bail your leaderless blog out in the midst of the impending recession ;)

Pity your not blogging at the moment now that the whole edifice on which you build much of your arguments is crashing down.

stop pissing about. I’m interested to hear your take on the current financial crisis.

  13. Hard Rain October 28, 2008 16:37

Oh Ivo, you’ve gotta get back into the thick of things- this world is far too hilarious these days not to. Like the manufacture of solar panels generating Nitrogen Trifluoride, an immensely more potent “greenhouse gas” than CO2 :D

I know, I know. In fact, there’s too much that’s interesting. I don’t know where to start. I suppose with the comment from Kameraad Mhambi above. He’s just so wrong, it’s too good not to shoot back.

Been very busy with other hobby projects too, not to mention having to focus on actual paying work for a while.

But for what it’s worth, I have considered carefully whether the time I spent blogging is time well spent, and have concluded that indeed it is. My diary should be more accommodating soon too.

So once the disaster in the US is over, and the world’s economy is saddled with a protectionist left-winger, I’ll make a fresh start. Just don’t expect to hear Hail to the Chief from me, unless tomorrow brings a more thrilling finale than yesterday’s F1 Grand Prix did.

  15. Kameraad Mhambi November 5, 2008 14:42

Lekker Ivo, I can’t wait for your riposte.

  16. Clayton Nash November 7, 2008 19:21

I’ve only just arrived and you’ve left already - perfect metaphor for the Internet in general - it’s all dazzle and lights but you soon realise all the cool kids are somewhere else.
Also, don’t fob us off with vague excuses about “work” or “projects” - details man!

  17. Ivo Vegter November 10, 2008 8:41

Hey, Mr Nash. You vanish for ten years and then demand details about my life? Okay then…

To make up for the rather unfortunate demise of Maverick and Empire magazines, for which I used to write columns, a fascinating (to me) series on media hoaxes, and other useful, income-generating stuff, I’ve had to line up some alternative writing work for both new and existing clients.

I’m also working (far too infrequently) on a model of an 18th century US navy sloop (described here, and offered for sale as “antique” and “unique” here), building a mahjongg table with bamboo and teak inlay, completing furniture and fittings for a doll-house for my niece, and making a pair of imbuia pieces for… uhm, wait, the intended recipients might read this. Also, I’m writing an area for an old-school RPG (MUD) I play, which is leading me down all sorts of weird mythology research paths. And I’m about to be late for a meeting.

So that’s what I’m doing. Also, I’m depressed. Not bitter, or angry, just deeply concerned about the good old USSA. I’m not quite sure where and when to start again with this blog, and in any case don’t want to do so if I can’t commit myself to a regular blogging schedule of at least three times a week, and preferably daily.

  18. naysh December 3, 2008 16:25

Still awaiting your return. have you ever considered handing over the blog to someone else to mind it for you while u are on your hiatus

  19. Ivo Vegter December 5, 2008 10:04

I’ll make it my Christmas present to myself to start blogging again. I might be on a slightly more restricted schedule in future, because of more interests competing for my time, but I have no intention of making this break permanent.

It’s done me good, for what it’s worth :-)

While you’re on holiday/retirement. Check out the movie “Zeitgeist Addendum”- it available for download. Enjoy :)

Please make a comeback this year.

  21. gert overit January 30, 2009 15:04

Ge(r)t over it, Ivo. You haven’t even been posting to your favorite mailing lists.

You backed the wrong horse on a few occasions, and created a sordid reality for yourself.

The Chief is dead. So what?

    What you gonna do?

    Leave the country?

    :)

  22. Kameraad Mhambi February 18, 2009 17:26

And today the high priest of free market capitalism says it might be necessary to nationalise the banks.

    http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/e310cbf6-fd4e-11dd-a103-000077b07658.html

Ag toe Ivo, kom baklei ‘n bietjie?

I think your not blogging because your world has been pulled out from under you. Don’t worry though, as much as I think the wold was way to up the arse of free market fundamentalism, the danger of protectionism is now very real. I’ll fight that corner for you. You see, I’m just practical, your an ideologue.

  23. Kameraad Mhambi February 18, 2009 17:37

Read this. Oh, the joys of not being beholden to ideology.

    http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/2ad3b750-fd27-11dd-a103-000077b07658.html

“You should not get caught up on a word [nationalisation],” he told the Financial Times in an interview. “I would argue that we cannot be ideologically a little bit pregnant. It doesn’t matter what you call it, but we can’t keep on funding these zombie banks [without gaining public control]. That’s what the Japanese did.”

Barack Obama, the president, who has tried to avoid panicking lawmakers and markets by entertaining the idea, has moved more towards what he calls the “Swedish model” – an approach backed strongly by Mr Graham. In the early 1990s Sweden nationalised its banking sector then auctioned banks having cleaned up balance sheets. “In limited circumstances the Swedish model makes sense for the US,” says Mr Graham.

    Hi Ivo,
You may be overdoing the rest thing.
We need you back at your post, posting!

    Ivo,

Would you be so kind as to write an arbituary for the esteemed “Poisoned Ivy”?

What a glorious day it is ….
